The Strain of Family Visits

Getting together with family can be incredibly stressful, often causing couples to feel disconnected.

You know how you arrive at your in-laws' house and instantly feel tension?!

Maybe it's the subtle comments from a relative or the chaos of trying to keep everyone happy.

These visits can create stress that drives a wedge between you and your partner, leaving you feeling isolated, frustrated, and undervalued.

The Ripple Effect of Weak Boundaries

Without clear boundaries, family visits can strain your relationship.

Picture this: you're at a family gathering, and once again, you're caught in the middle of a dispute or feeling pressured to take sides in a long-standing debate.

This snowballs into unnecessary arguments and resentment with your partner.

HERE'S WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING...

Thank you for the strategies for maintaining harmony while interacting with in-laws. We recently experienced a very tricky visit with inlaws. We returned home with a wide range of emotions because the visit and these relationships are very intense. But those feelings did not include frustration with one another.

The CONCISE structure for prepping before time with family and debriefing after returning to our space was very helpful. Feelings being expressed guarded us from having them slip out sideways toward one another. We mention the concise nature of the process, because it did not add to our exhaustion. Reflection can be tiring, but after our directed conversations there was room for refreshment.

We surely will use these strategies in the future and can see how they would apply to lots of situations!
